This Mine of Mine: Mining for Electricity

This Mine of Mine: Mining for Electricity is a teaching module developed by the Ohio Energy Project through the sponsorship of the Ohio Coal Development Office. The module is designed for grades 2-4 and meets a number of the Ohio science proficiency learning outcomes for fourth grade students.

This Mine of Mine: Mining for Electricity allows students to explore surface coal mining. Using sand, clay, topsoil, and rocks, students build a miniature plot of land containing coal deposits. Students then learn about the surface mining method of retrieving coal from the earth and practice the method on their plot of land. After the coal is mined, students reclaim the plot of land, including planting grass seed. The document includes a teacher guide, list of Ohio proficiencies met, student guide, student journal and a list of resources.
