Ohio Sites not among FutureGen Finalists
State leaders nevertheless tout benefits of participating in the competition
(Columbus) State officials learned today that proposed sites in Meigs and Tuscarawas Counties did not make the short list for consideration to host the FutureGen power plant. The short list announcement was made this morning in Washington, D.C. by the FutureGen Industrial Alliance, which jointly proposed FutureGen with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
“We are disappointed, and frankly somewhat surprised, that neither of our sites made the short list. Regardless, as the Interim Report on FutureGen prepared by the Ohio FutureGen Task Force clearly shows, our state reaped numerous benefits through our participation in this competition,” said Mark R. Shanahan, executive director of the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority.
Jo Ann Davidson, Ohio FutureGen Task Force facilitator and former Ohio House Speaker, said, “We proved that Ohioans from diverse backgrounds and interests can forge partnerships aimed at helping Ohio compete for major scientific and economic development opportunities. And we now know our state offers numerous sites that are ripe for future development for clean-coal power plants and other major energy or industrial facilities.”
Shanahan said that, regardless of today’s announcement, Ohio is well-positioned to compete for the next-generation FutureGen power plants envisioned by DOE and the Industrial Alliance, or other energy projects.
